AEO: Being the Answer in Google's Answer Boxes and Voice Search

A large share of searches are now questions: "How long does it take to build a website?", "How do I set up a business email?" Google shows the answer in a box above the results, and voice assistants read it out in one sentence. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of making that box and that sentence come from your site.

What is an answer engine?

A search engine gives you a list of links; an answer engine gives you the answer directly. Google's featured snippet, the "People also ask" box, the knowledge panel and voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant all belong to this group. AEO came before GEO and is a narrower idea: one correct answer to one question.

What I do in AEO

Finding your customers' questions

  • Google's "People also ask" boxes and autocomplete suggestions
  • Question-style searches in Search Console, like "how", "how much", "how many days"
  • The questions you get most often on WhatsApp and on the phone; this is often the most valuable list

Writing in answer form

  • The question becomes a heading, followed right away by a clear 40–60 word answer, then the details
  • Numbered lists for step-by-step tasks, tables for comparisons
  • Conversational language: in voice search people don't say "website price", they ask "how much does it cost to get a website made?"

FAQs and structured data

  • An FAQ section on every service page, written from real questions (like on this site)
  • FAQPage, Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and BreadcrumbList structured data. Since 2023 Google only shows FAQ rich results for government and health sites, but structured data still helps Google and AI match questions to the right answers.
  • An up-to-date Google Business Profile for searches like "... open near me": opening hours, address, phone, services
  • Short, one-sentence answers a voice assistant can read out

AEO sits between SEO and GEO

AEO is built on the SEO foundation: a page Google doesn't rank can't get into an answer box either. Content written in question-and-answer form also works for GEO; AI likes to quote these clear pieces when writing answers. I explain the difference between the three in one table.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of getting a site shown as the direct answer to a question in Google's featured snippet, the "People also ask" box and voice assistants.

Don't featured snippets reduce clicks?

For simple questions they sometimes do, because the user reads the answer in the box. But the box shows your name and site; users who want details click through from there. Those who don't click still remember you as the expert on that topic.

Is voice search used in Turkey?

Yes, especially on phones and in cars. A large share of local searches like "pharmacy open near me" or "nearest car wash" are made by voice. For these, the answer is usually read from the Google Business Profile.

Do I need a new site for AEO?

Usually not. Most of the time it's enough to turn existing pages into question-and-answer form, add FAQ sections and fix the structured data. If the site is very slow or Google can't see the pages, that gets fixed first.

Is a separate FAQ page enough?

Not on its own. The question should be on the page where the answer is most useful: the price question on the pricing page, the delivery time question on the service page. A separate FAQ page is a good place to collect them, but it shouldn't be the only place.
